These are elective courses; in order to receive the Animal Disaster Responder certificate 40 hours must be completed within this level. Many of the topics included in this academy can be taught as standalone courses.
Outdoor Safety for Humans and Animals (OSHA)
2 Days (16 hours)
Responding to rescue and disaster situations can put both human and animals in harms way. Learning to be safe in these situations is a must for any professional or volunteer responder, day hiker or adventurer. The OSHA class will give you the basic skills to understand weather patterns, warning signs and precautions for severe weather, basic knots, common raising and lowering systems, principles of first aid for humans and animals, basic water safety and basic fire safety. Equipment Needed: Boots, Gloves, Helmet
Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)
2 Days (16 hours)
Materials Hazardous to animals and humans can come in many forms. This class will give you an awareness of sources of contamination, how to handle different types of hazardous materials, decontamination and what personal protective equipment to use.
Animal Rescue in Floodwaters (ARF)
2 Days (16 hours)
Rescuing animals from floodwaters can bring about its own set of challenges. This course gives you both classroom instruction and hands on in the field. You will learn about the hazards of working in floodwater, personal protective equipment (PPE), other equipment needed for the job, the challenges of animal rescue in flood water, boat operation and safety and decontamination procedures for animals, humans and equipment. Equipment needed: Gloves, Boots, Dry Suit, Water helmet, Water boots , Approved personal floatation devises (PFD)
Confined Space (C/S)
2 Days (16 hours)
Many times in field operations animals disappear down a hole, in a culvert or under a building. This class is designed to train field responders to enter confined spaces and retrieve animals. You will learn to recognize confined spaces, assess safety issues, roles and responsibilities of team members, use of monitoring equipment, and use of safety equipment. This 2 day class includes one day in class and 1 day practical exercise. Equipment needed: Gloves, Helmet with light, Heavy Boots
Trench and Compromised Structure (TCS)
2 Days (16 hours)
As a field rescuer you need to know if a structure is compromised and unsafe to enter or if a trench or culvert is unsafe. This class will give you classroom instruction and then give you hands on scenarios to improve your skills at recognition and rescue. Equipment needed: Gloves, Helmet with light, Heavy Boots
Ice Rescue
3 Days (24 hours)
Every year people and animals fall through iced over ponds, lakes, streams and rivers. Unfortunately, in many cases human life is lost trying to save an animal that has fallen through the ice. All first responders and rescuers need to know how to affect a rescue without becoming a victim themselves. Participants will learn the proper techniques to make any rescue from cold or ice covered waters. Instruction will include safety considerations and how to use normally available and specialized equipment. Techniques specific for animal rescue will be demonstrated and performed. Equipment needed: Personal flotation device (PFD), Full Wet suit or dry suit, Thick-soled water booties or sneakers, Water or climbing helmet (this Must cover the back of the head and drain water), heavy/sturdy gloves for climbing, Hiking boots.
Technical Animal Rescue (TAR)
3 Days (24 hours)
Rescuing an animal should not place the rescuer at undo risk. The Technical Animal Rescue (T.A.R) course is an intensive three-day, hands-on course that teaches how to rescue an animal without becoming a victim. Participants will learn basics of incline rope and water rescue of people and animals. Knots, rigging, rope work and equipment for low angle rescue and techniques for working in flat or slow water will be demonstrated and practiced. All of this will be done while also learning how standard and specialized techniques can be used to rescue frightened, trapped or injured animals. This class is designed for animal control officers, humane officers, animal welfare workers, fire & rescue disaster workers, law enforcement officers, veterinary professionals and anyone who may be called to assist animals in trouble. This class is certified through Rescue 3 International and taught by certified instructors. Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SRT)
3 Days (24-30 hours)
The initial emphasis of this course is on self-rescue skills and covers rescuing and extricating an accident victim from the water. Skills learned include safely swimming in swiftwater and maneuvering so as to negotiate river hazards and obstacles at various water levels, handling small inflatable boats by paddle, oar and on tether, understanding swiftwater rescue team organization and the response of the victim, knowing the responsibilities of law-enforcement and on-scene leadership, fording shallow and fast-moving water utilizing various techniques, crossing deep, slow-moving and fast-moving water utilizing basic climbing gear, small boats, and combinations of the two as well as utilizing climbing and technical rescue gear applicable to swiftwater rescue. This intense course includes one day of classroom instruction followed by two days of developing and practicing water rescue skills; it provides the fundamentals of swiftwater rescue and is recommended for anyone who may assist with swiftwater rescues.
