Code 3 Responds in Our Own Backyard

Code 3 Associates responds all over the country, and we are always ready to help with rescuing animals in communities that have been impacted by natural disasters.

Just a few short weeks ago we were again asked to respond and help – this time we did not have to travel very far, in fact it was in our own backyard. Severe flooding impacted a huge portion of Colorado’s Front Range, including Longmont where our main office is located.  Boulder County requested our assistance in and around one of the hardest hit areas, the town of Lyons, just a few miles from us.

Code 3 Associates teams spent a week working in conjunction with Boulder County Animal Control Officers and American Humane Association personnel to evacuate and rescue animals. While the majority of area residents evacuated with their animals, we were there to help those who were unable to do so.

One of our team’s first responses was helping two horses that were stranded in an area of rising water.  The horse owners themselves had been swept up in the raging water while going out to check on the horses and spent 5 hours stranded in a tree before their own rescue.  We were able to successfully get the horses to safety and reunited with their human family. Over the next several days we were able to rescue over 100 animals from homes that owners were not able to return to – this included horses, dogs, cats, a gecko and even pet chickens.

The floodwaters are now receding, but recovering from the devastation will be a long process. Fortunately most residents are now able to get to their homes and properties so Code 3’s assistance is no longer needed.  However, we stand ready to help, should a community find itself in need.
