The Animal Cruelty Connection

We used to say things like “boys will be boys” or “it was only a cat” to excuse acts of animal cruelty. Today those same acts are recognized as a possible precursor to domestic violence or even homicide.

Statistics show that:

  • 71% of battered women report that their pets had been threatened, harmed, and or killed by their partners
  • 85% of domestic violence shelters report women coming to their facilities related incidents of pet abuse

Law enforcement and your community can benefit by understanding and being able to identify the signs of animal cruelty and the link that exists with violent crimes. Once these forms of violence are identified, community leaders can devise a multi-directional approach to combating these crimes. Code 3 Associates is here to help the community examine the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence.
