The Technical Animal Rescue (TAR) course teaches how to rescue an animal without becoming a victim. Participants will receive hands-on training in low angle rope and swiftwater rescue techniques for animals and people.
Behavior and handling of frightened, trapped or injured animals
Use of specialized techniques and equipment
Use of “ready at hand” equipment
Basics of incline rope and water rescue of people and animals
Knots, rigging, rope work and equipment for low-angle rescue
Techniques for working in flat and slow current water
This three-day technical rescue class is designed for first responders, fire & rescue workers, animal control officers, humane officers, animal welfare workers, law enforcement officers, veterinary professionals and anyone who may require emergency response training to assist animals in trouble. Technical Animal Rescue is taught to human rescue standards and meets NFPA guidelines for firefighter training.
Technical Animal Rescue, taught by certified instructors, is certified through Rescue 3 International. Depending on the class location, this course may also be taught in partnership with Colorado State University for certification – please contact us for verification. If the course is offered in partnership with CSU, upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate and are eligible to apply for continuing education credits from Colorado State University and veterinary professionals may apply to receive CEU’s from Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
The Technical Animal Rescue faculty may include Kim Little, Jim Boller and Eric Thompson.
Equipment Necessary for Class
1. Personal flotation device (PFD)
2. Full dry suit
3. Thick-soled water booties or sneakers
4. Water or climbing helmet (this must cover the back of the head and drain water)
5. Heavy/sturdy gloves for water and rope work
6. Sturdy hiking boots or work boots
The PFD, dry suit and helmet can be rented from Code 3. Please contact us for details.
Dates, Location, Cost
Registration must be received in advance. Early registration is recommended as we reserve the right to reschedule or cancel one month prior to class start date because of insufficient enrollment.
